We have a Garmin Nuvi which has been really accurate and super easy to use. The free updates are nice, too. We take it on trips and use the iPhone for around town. In fact, we are a bit anal and even have a PAPER map from AAA in the glovebox. Now if I could just figure out how to fold it back up again properly.

For the OP, I`ve never used a TomTom, but nearly everything I read points to Garmin Nuvi as the best choice, and therefore that`s all I have bought. I got one for my dad at Costco, maybe a month or two ago, and the two choices for Garmin were identical in price- one was with lifetime updates, and the other was with a 5" screen. I chose the latter as my father is old and can use the larger screen. (0.7" increase over a 4.3" may not sound like much at all, but it`s actually a huge* increase when accounting for a typical aspect ratio of a display device, with the particular sizes we talk about with GPS devices.)
I can`t be bothered yet, but if I chose my credit card all over again, I`d probably get that Costco Amex. What also makes it different is that it`s not miles based, but it`s cash back. Varying %s of cash back on all kinds of things, including gas.

I`ve had a Garmin Nuvi 200W for 3 1/2 years. Other than having to replace the power cord it has worked flawlessly. Updated it about a year and a half ago for free, my brother figured out how to do it through their website.
Google Maps > every other ****ing **** GPS system. Owned a TomTom, still have a Garmin 1300(?), and in car GPS systems; and nothing hands down is better than a google maps powered device.
When we`re just talking about accuracy and updates you will not get anything better. Free updates? Yes. On point GPS system? Yes. The only issue? you have to use your phone which is already a power hungry little thing with a little screen. Don`t know any GPS system or car manufacture ATM that uses Google maps as their GPS system and IMHO some of them should.
I`ve had several, our families last two were Garmins and we love them. My wife understands how to use to. LOL that means its very user friendly.

I had a NAVMAN F-10 or so I think it was called several years ago, proved to be reliable cost about 99 I think.
I`d spend a bit of time in Seattle now and then. When I was taking cabs here and there, I`d grill the cabbies about their nav systems and Garmin was their choice hands down.
I eventually bought the Garmin Nuvi and it`s a champ. Those cabbies were on the right track, so think Garmin.
Yeah, at that price point, the Garmins are extremely competitive, even considering this thread is several years old.
I`m moving away from my regular GPS units. Nav on the phone has gotten better than the dedicated units. I really like Motion-X for going to new places and Waze is great for traffic jams.
