Import AutoCAD files into Revit - Revit Tutorial

- [Instructor] One item that I'm sure is on the exam is gonna be Copy Monitor. This is a very important part of Revit. So let's just jump in and do it. Under Projects, let's start a new mechanical model using the Mechanical Template. Go to the Insert tab, and let's Link Revit. Notice I'm going a little faster, because we just kind of covered this. Select Architectural. I want the positioning to be Origin to Origin. Click Open. Beautiful. Now, we don't know what the architect has for levels, meaning how high is this building and how many floor plans do they have. We have the two default plans, but that doesn't really mean anything. What we want to do is we want to copy and monitor the architectural levels. That way if the architect moves a level, we'll get a coordination alert next time we reload their model. But, to do it, we need to be in either a section or an elevation. Let's go to our south elevation. We can open that up in the Project Browser, or we can zoom in on this elevation marker here, and just double click on the little pointer. You might see a lot of different levels that are confusing, and such is the case here. Notice that the architectural underlay, if we hover over this Level 2 that's at 18 feet, we'll see that it highlights the architectural model. Our Level 2 is at 10 feet. We want that to be 18 feet, but the first thing we need to do is kind of move our levels out of the mess here so we can see what we're doing. Select Level 2. Notice that we get this little temporary alignment and a lock icon, and a little grip here. Also, it says 3D. Every other elevation, if we keep 3D clicked on, it will move it in that elevation, as well. We want that to happen, so let's just keep that turned on. Grab this little grip here, pick it, and let's drag it over to the right. Notice that it will bring Level 1 with it. Now let go of it. Hit Escape a couple of times. Now, I want to align Level 2 to the Architectural Level 2. To do that, let's go to the Align command. On the Modify tab we click Align, or in parentheses we can type AL for align. Now, with the Align command running, we want to click on Level 2 of the Architectural model first, that's the destination. So click on the destination object first, and the item we want to move second. So we move Level 2 up to 18 feet. Hit Escape a couple of times. What we want to do now is activate Copy Monitor. Before I do that, though, I'm gonna set my scale to something a little bit higher. So instead of 1/8th inch equals a foot, let's go to 1/4 inch equals a foot. That way we can see our levels a little bit better. This time we go to the Collaborate tab. And under Copy/Monitor we click the fly-out and I want to Select Link. Select the Architectural model. What we need to do now is we need to monitor. Because we already have Level 1 and Level 2, we just want to monitor it. So click Monitor, select Level 1, then select the Architectural Level 1. And if we zoom over here, notice that we have that that little heartbeat icon, which means that we successfully did it. Select Level 2 and Level 2, verify that we have the icon. Now, what we need to do is Copy. So click on the Copy button, but before we copy anything, I want to go to the Options. Click on the Options button. What happens is if we copy levels, the Original type is a 1/4 inch head, and the new type will be Plenum. I want to change that. For the New type, I want it to be the same thing, 1/4 inch Head and No Head. We'll keep it No Head. That way it brings them in as the same thing. Grids, I'll keep these the same. Notice that we can bring in Columns, Walls and Floors, as well. So if we go to Columns and we drill into that, we have to specify what the new type is gonna be, but that new type has to be loaded into this model before you can copy it. Same goes for all the other stuff. Walls and Floors. If you're going to copy any of this stuff, make sure that you configure this. Click OK. Now, let's proceed with copying the Architectural levels in. Click Multiple. Hold down your Control key. Let's zoom in, select Level 3, select Level 4, select Level 5, and select your Roof level. Click on Finish. It's important to note that you click the Finish button down here, first. We get a couple warnings, meaning that we're renaming a Level Head to Circle 1, that's fine. Close out of there. Now, notice that we could Stop Monitoring, if we wanted. But what I want to do is click on Copy Monitor, again, up here and just remember to click Finish. I always forget this step. And that's it. That's how you Copy Monitor Levels.
