General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
- The General Data Protection Regulation, GDPR, set a new standard for privacy protection when it went into effect in 2018. GDPR is a comprehensive European Union privacy regulation that unifies the privacy regulations of the EU nations and allows for the exchange of data between those countries. GDPR aims to protect all personal data for everyone in the European Union by regulating any entity that handles that data. Under the GDPR definition, personal data includes any information that identifies an individual. This can be anything from a name and birthdate to specific geolocation information or other characteristics of a person. Now, it's important to understand that GDPR doesn't only apply to citizens of EU member states. It applies to anyone who is physically located in the European Union at the time that they share personal information.
