What is ETL and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)?

- [Instructor] We've talked about the role that ETL or extract, transform, and load plays in feeding data from multiple disparate data sources into the data warehouse. ETL is an important component in the overall business intelligence system. Let's spend a few minutes and discuss that process in more depth. The most common tool for performing ETL in a SQL Server-based data warehouse is called SQL Server Integration Services. Integration Services or SSIS is a platform for building workflows that can automate and standardize complex data-related tasks. As the name would imply, it can help integrate data from a variety of sources, including other SQL Server databases, Excel spreadsheets, flat files such as CSV, and XML files, and pull it all together into a single destination database.
