Managing conflict

- How do you deal with conflict? Head on, avoid it, or blow up? Dealing with conflict is one of the most uncomfortable areas of a leader's job, and far too many leaders have not honed the necessary skills to effectively deal with it. In coaching many leaders, here are a few tips on the best approaches that I've seen work. First, don't ignore it or avoid it, confront it. This is often the hardest to do because most people don't like confrontation, but when confronting an issue with someone be careful to do it at the right time, in the right place, using the right tone of voice and choice of words. For example, when I had to have a difficult conversation with a team member about raising his voice, using foul language, and making wrong accusations in a meeting I made sure that I dealt with it as soon as possible and I did it at a time when I was not upset, wasn't rushed or feeling distracted.
