- Leading during victories or growth can be really exciting. Unfortunately, most organizations aren't always sunshine and rainbows. In tough times, people tend to focus on blame and reactionary activities which often leads to despair. But that doesn't have to be you. Here's a formula to keep your focus and move forward during these tough times. Start by listening. Staying calm while others air their feelings of disappointment or frustration can help everyone move forward faster. Letting the feelings out actually shortens the amount of time people will experience them. To add empathy you'll need to put your view on pause just for a second and validate what you've heard, that they're concerned. When you say things like, "This is tough, I get it," you become more trusted and aligned as a team. Next, look for themes. Sometimes hard times are isolated incidents. Other times, not so much.
