Using the exercise files and linking your media

- [Instructor] If you have access to the exercise files used throughout this course, you can access them via the exercise files link on the main overview course page. You'll download a compressed zip file, and when you unzip the file you'll see a folder labeled Exercise Files. Now, first things first, it's important that you know what version of Premiere Pro you've got so that you're working with the right course and the right exercise files. This training is for Adobe Premiere Pro Version 2022 and later. Please watch the next video in this chapter for more information on this. All right, let's talk about the exercise files. If you open up this folder, you'll see a folder inside called On The Shores Of This Bay, and inside there is a media folder and a project folder. Let me just describe these briefly. In the project folder is a project file and you'll be working with this starting in chapter three and going through the rest of the course. Inside here contains step by step materials for everything we do throughout the training. So even though you can't see any of that at the finder level, once you launch the project, you'll see everything inside. The media folder contains all of your assets. As you can see, there are folders inside of folders here and everything is really well organized for you, all right. But what's important is that you don't move or change any of these files. And that's because this project file is linked to all of this media. So on that note, don't think that simply importing all of this media into an empty project will work if you want to follow along with the exercise files. I just mentioned this because it's a common issue. People will import all of this and say, Hey, where's my step by step exercise files? You absolutely need this project file to be able to follow along with me. All right, so with that said, let's go ahead and launch the project. I'm just going to double click on my project file. And while this is launching, I just want to mention that this is a dual platform training. I'll be working in a Mac, but because many of you will be on a PC, I'll be calling out both Mac and PC shortcut commands and we'll have graphic overlays on screen to direct you to the right command throughout the training. So the first time that you start your project, you will need to link your media. So let's go through this. I have a screen here showing me all of my media is offline. What I want to do, is make sure that this box is checked, relink others automatically. And this will allow me to just link one file and then it will link everything else. So the first step in linking your media is to click on locate. And remember when I said that the project file needed to be linked to the media folder? Well, that's what we're locating here. So here I have a desktop, exercise files, On The Shores Of This Bay, and I want to just select this media folder. So right now Premiere Pro is specifically looking for this file. Charles motorboat, CU face and hand, slow MOS. I could go searching for this file, but I don't have to. All I need to do is select the media folder and tell Premiere Pro to search. It should find the file right away, as you can see it found it. So once I found the file, I just say, okay. And because I have relink others automatically selected it's going to bring all of my media online. As you can see, I have a check mark next to all of my media, except it didn't find one file here. So I'm just going to perform the search again. I have that selected and then I'll say locate. I'll click on media, I'll say search, and it found that last file and I'll say, okay. All right, so that should be a pretty painless process. And again, if for some reason it finds some or most of the files, but not all of them. Just repeat that process. And once you're in the software and have successfully relinked everything, I just recommend pressing command S or control S to save it, and now you should never need to relink your media again. All right, so once inside the project, you should see an asset's bin at the top. And inside there, things should look pretty familiar. This is the same folder hierarchy that we saw with our media, okay. Most of the time though, you're not going to really need to climb into here. Because through most of the course, we're going to be working in the exercise files bin. If I twirl this down, you can see that everything is labeled from chapter three onward. So if you're in the fifth movie of chapter three, you just twirl this down, go into the 3.5 bin and then here's everything that you need for that movie. In many cases, I'll provide both a pre and a post version of the sequence. So here's everything that you need at the beginning of the movie, before we do anything, and then here's a version of the sequence once we've gone through all of the steps. And again, we start in chapter three because chapters one and two do not use this project. Chapter one takes you on a tour of the Premiere Pro environment. And chapter two shows you how to import and organize your media from scratch. So while we will be using the media for those chapters, we won't be using this project from the exercise files. Now, if you don't have access to the exercise files then you can definitely feel free to follow along with your own assets. Let's get started.
