Installing Windows 11

- [Instructor] Now we're going to talk about installing Windows 11. I'll be installing on a virtual machine, but the process is exactly the same for a physical machine. In the first dialog box, I'm prompted for a language, a time and currency format, a keyboard or input method. So choose the appropriate options for each of these, and then click Next. On the next window, the only option I'm given is Install Now. So I'll click on that. And typically, at this point, I will be prompted for a product key. The product key I have is for Windows 11 Professional, but you could also use Windows 11 Home for this. And then click Next. Be sure to read and understand all of the notices and license terms. Then check the box, say you accept, and click Next. Then I'm given the option to either upgrade or do a custom install. I would like to do an install because this is not an upgrade. I'm installing on a blank computer. It's asking what disc drive I would like to install to. My computer only has one disc drive, so it's a pretty easy decision. I'll select that one and click Next. And then you'll be waiting for a few minutes. Well, anywheres from a few minutes to several minutes while Windows performs the steps it's listing on the screen. You'll see a percent complete next to each one, and a green checkmark once that step is complete. Now Windows has completed the necessary steps and is going to reboot. So I'll allow that to happen. Here for me it's showing Hyper-V because I'm using a Hyper-V virtual machine. If you were installing on physical hardware, you would probably see the logo of the hardware manufacturer on the screen. And now Windows is going to ask me a series of questions. I'm going to answer them appropriately for my location. You can do the same for your location. So it's asking what country I'm in. I'll select my country and click Yes. Asking about what type of keyboard I'd like. I'll choose US and click Yes. Would I like to add a second keyboard? No, thank you. So I will skip that. And now it's checking for updates. My machine is connected to a network, so it should be able to connect to the Microsoft Update Server, and potentially pull down any updates. If you're not connected to a network, this step might work a little differently, and you'll have to apply updates later. And again, it's telling me it's going to restart again. Now it's asking me to name the device. The name is not important to the functionality. It's just an administrative function for you to find the computer. And then I'll click Next. Then it's asking if I'd like to set up for personal use or a second category of work or school. I'm going to choose personal use and click Next. Then it would like me to add a Microsoft account. You can skip this step, but I'm going to choose not to. And I'm going to go ahead and give it my Microsoft account and click Next. And then it wants the password for that account. And I'll click Sign in. It would like me to create a pin number which can be used to log in locally to the machine. So I'll click Create pin, and then I'll type in a new pin. And then type in the exact same pin again. Now it's telling me that the Microsoft account I used has been used on other PCs, and it's giving me the option to restore my files from that other machine. But that's not what I'd like to do. I'd like to make this into a new PC, not a clone of an old PC. So I'll click on Set up as new device and then click Next. In this interface, it's asking me to configure some of the options around privacy, such as would I like to disclose my location, and different diagnostic data. I am just going to accept the default on all of these and click Accept. Now it's asking me to customize my experience by potentially installing entertainment software, school software, creativity software. I will skip all of that for now. We can always go back later and add any of this. It's asking me if I'd like to back up my files with One Drive. They should be automatically protected. So I'll click Next to accept the defaults. It's asking me if I'd like to have a free trial of Microsoft 365. Although that's a very good product, and if you don't have it, I recommend going for the free trial. But that's not the focus of this course, so I will decline. And same with Xbox. Again, a good product. Feel free to join if you like it, but not the purpose of this course. So I will skip for now. And now my computer tells me hi. I like when computers are friendly towards me. And now it looks like everything is installed and we're ready to log in. It's prompting me for the pin that I set up during installation. so I'll type that in. And now I've successfully installed and logged into a new Windows 11 machine.
