I believe the instructor intended to say that a trojan is malware attached to a program rather than a virus as there are many types of computer viruses.
Oxford Languages defines the term computer virus as a piece of code that is capable of copying itself and typically has a detrimental effect, such as corrupting the system or destroying data. One type of computer virus is a boot sector virus or code attached to document such as a document not a program.
